How It Works:
There is a heat transfer fluid in the collector that is circulated between the collector and the storage tank.
The fluid is a non toxic propylene glycol, so it will not freeze. In the storage tank there is a
heat exchanger that heats
and circulates the
water until the storage tank reaches the set
temperature (Max. 205° F). The water temperature is set at the tank the same way you would set a standard electric tanked water heater.
After this is done, the storage tank works just like a standard tanked water
heater. A back-up heating source will be needed in cloudy/colder
climates, however this is almost never needed in sunny areas such
as California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, etc.
This system will provide enough hot water for a family of four.
However, as with all
alternative heating systems, lower usage would have to become the lifestyle in order for this technology to yield the energy savings that most people are looking for.
This change in lifestyle is much easier to accomplish than most
people realize.
This system would also work very well to heat the incoming water for a
tankless water heater and therefore save a lot of the energy cost to heat the water to the tankless heaters set
point. You would still need a collector and storage tank to
